Frugal Living & Organics

E-mail Print PDF

Sure, I like to eat pesticide-free foods just as much as the next person. The only problem is that organic fruits and vegetables aren’t always conducive to a frugal living food budget.

A great solution to help keep your food cost down, while still minimizing your consumption of foods sprayed with pesticides, is to only buy organic when it’s a fruit or vegetable that doesn’t have a skin, peel or husk that will be removed before you eat it. So, for example, you might want to consider buying organic peaches, apples or berries, but not mangoes because you will only be removing the skin that protects the fruit’s flesh from the chemicals.

It’s a small adjustment but you will definitely notice a difference in your food cost as organic produce can cost about 25% more. And, if there isn’t any room in your frugal living food budget for any organic produce, don’t forget the old soak in vinegar first trick to help remove the pesticides.
